R.I.P. Ernie Payne

erniepayne

His music was roots music, delta blues, contemporary folk. He made his first tour in Europe in 2004 and performed in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Ireland and in the UK where he did a recoding session for Andy Kershaw’s Show. Ernie was my friend and I will miss him very much. I spent today with his family and they are just wonderful as he was. If you have not heard his music, it will touch your soul if you have one.
Ernie Payne is a great loss. I will miss you.

Ernie was a friend and a year younger than me, so I was shocked to find out that he died last week although I knew he had been ill. He was a musician, songwriter and singer, who chose to stay at home and raise his two children. Being on the road cuts in to that precious childhood time. He put his family first. When they grew up he resumed his music career, an amazing feat. Our children went to school together. That’s how I met Ernie. Our kids were on the same sports teams, the same youth club, and Ernie never missed his children’s events. He was part of the backbone of our close knit community. We could depend on Ernie to be with his children for the hikes, picnics and ball games that revolved around our children’s lives.

I always loved Ernie’s courage. He had a keen eye for any injustice against humanity. You can hear that in “The Curse of Hamm,” and he evokes the anger, sadness and pain of that cruelty in his voice and the twang of his guitar. Honestly, I didn’t know Ernie as an artist, although I saw him perform once at a club in Los Angeles and knew he had played professionally as a younger man. His friends and family went to see him that night; his first club date in many years. I just went to support my friend when he was getting back to his music; it was a fun night and almost like a big house party. I didn’t realize it was part of a path that would take him to Europe, the U.K. and produce a wonderful CD. I never met anyone that didn’t like Ernie. I heard his CD for the first time today at his memorial service. His wonderful wife gave me a copy to take home and it really did knock me out when I played it. His greatest songs will always be his two children and the family he created. He really was one of the finest people I ever knew. He had no pretenses. I will miss him.

    Hi,
I had the wonderful pleasure of accidentally filming Mr Ernie Payne when he visited the UK on his first tour.
What brilliant performer he was and superb songwriter, he was one of those rare talents that was able to move you and take you some where else with his music, to me he definately seemed to be in the same vain as fellow songwriters Richie Havens and Terry Callier, coming from the same place.
Sad then, that he wasn’t allowed a bit more longevity and success before he was taken from the music world.
I’m glad I had the chance to document him on film. A wonderful performer.
You can see more footage of Mr Payne at our “echofilms” youtube channel.
